Suggest Treatment For Anxiety And Negative Behavior Due To Loneliness

Question: I have been living with a man for 30 years and this past year I left and retired to Florida. He was obviously upset, but we have remained friends and I stay with him when I travel north. Within the last six months he has become fixated on my 46 year old daughter and granddaughter. He sends her letters begs her to spend the weekend and wants to have a romantic relationship. She and I both have told him to stop that he is causing her great anxiety and stress but he says he can't stop his feelings. He has been a normal, rational, kind human being his whole life. He's drinking excessively, is emotional, and becomes agitated and pounds tables. I'm angry and hurt, but mostly I am concerned that he is having a mental breakdown. What could be wrong with him?

Brief Answer:
Can prove to be a threat if in close proximity

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Alcohol can do more harm than you can expect. In my opinion, he underwent a great deal of anxiety and possibly even anger when you chose to relocate.

Along with these strong feelings came loneliness which can cause an individual to take irrational decisions and want company, no matter what form it comes in. His impotency may have caused him a great deal of frustration and possibly even make him a little more stable, knowing that he may not find anyone else as understanding as you. But there could possibly be a sexual aspect to this as well, seeing a younger woman his sexual feelings could have been triggered resulting in his increased sexual frustration and need for physical contact.

I would sum this up by saying that he is being irrational purely due to loneliness, anger and frustration resulting in a psychosocial breakdown. He needs counselling and he may need it soon, as such individuals cannot be rationalised with and so they can even cause harm to the person in speaking (namely your daughter).

I hope you feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.
