Suggest Treatment For Anxiety, Indigestion And Heartburn While On Paxil

Question: I am a 57 tear old otherwise health female with no significant health issues. I do take a daily small does of Paxil and this past week or so I have been taking a small dose of a generic type anti-anxiety drug. Anyway-The past 3 weeks I have had intermittent indigestion. Not really heartburn but more like a sour stomach on the mild-moderate end of things. It improves with antacids and also improves for a short time after eating. I do notice it is worse on empty stomach. I also am burping more than usual. Otherwise do not feel bloated or any significant pain. Am worried that this is some kind of cancer. What else could be going on? Have had very infrequent bouts of heartburn-indigestion in the past. xxxxxxx

Thanks for writing to us. I can understand your concern.

Heart burn, improvement with antacids, relief with food, burning on empty stomach all are symptoms suggestive of stomach problem which may be gastritis or peptic ulcer.

For confirmation of diagnosis barium swallow x-ray and/or upper GI scopy are needed. Better to consult doctor /surgeon as soon as possible for the same. If there is no relation between paxil and symptoms, it can be continued otherwise it should be stopped.

Treatment can be done after establishing diagnosis in form of anti acidity drugs with anti biotic. Avoid spicy/sour food for a while.
