Suggest Treatment For Anxiety

Question: Hello,

This is a question related to mental health. I do not know whether I have general anxiety disorder or something else. When I am trying to socialize, I feel that I cannot talk correctly, and/or that people cannot understand what I'm saying. What I mean is that people will say "what did you say? I can't understand you" when I speak to them. Yet, when I'm alone (by myself) I feel like I can talk outloud and understand myself perfectly fine. Also, I constantly feel like I'm being watched and observed. An example is that if I'm sitting at a desk working and there are other people in the room, I feel that my movements are being "tracked" if that makes any sense. I do not drink alcohol/caffeine, do not smoke cigarettes nor do I do any other drug at all. I only drink water and eat normal food. I feel like whenever I am around almost anybody with the exception of my mom and dad, the person I'm around will suddenly grow nervous due to my presence. I also think untrue thoughts almost constantly. When I say "untrue thoughts", I mean bizarre believes such as hearing a song come on the radio and thinking that it came on "for a reason". I know that they are not true, yet I still find meaning in random events that occur nearly every day. I tell myself "there is no meaning to this" and yet I continue to think the same thing (that random occurrences have meaning). I'm 25 years old and have been dealing with these symptoms for the past four years or so.

Need some more information....

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I read your query in detail and can understand your concern with the symptoms that you have mentioned. From what you have detailed, it seems you have some sort of anxiety disorder. Your problem of feeling tracked by other people may be suggestive of anxiety in social situations. Some of your thoughts might also be a manifestation of anxiety. Still, with this information, it will be difficult to definitely come to a conclusion. To be able to help you understand your problem better, it would be helpful if you clear following points:

- Do you feel embarrassed in social situations?
- Do you avoid meeting new people or going to places where you don't know much people?
- Do you feel that the thoughts that you have mentioned are repetitive and do you try to stop these thoughts by any means?
- Do you worry a lot about things in general?
- Do you do any action repeatedly (checking things/ washing or cleaning, etc.)?
- Are you afraid of any thing or situation?

With the help of this information, I might be able to help you in a better way. Alternatively, you can seek a psychiatric consultation in person. Detailed evaluation will help in reaching a conclusion and deciding future course of action.

Hope I have been of help. I will be happy to help further for any follow up questions.

Best wishes,

Dr. Sunil Gupta
