Question: Hi, I am currently 33 years old. I have severe fragrance allergy to perfumes/ cigarette smoke/ smoke from anything burning etc. Basically I just cant breathe normal. I didnt have asthma as a kid, but when I was a teenager it started. I used to take nebulizer in the hospital every 6 months. Right now my state is very bad. I get an asthma attack every 2 weeks. 2 months ago I went to the doctor he precribed, Deriphyllin 150mg and Montek LC alongwith Seroflow 125 everyday for a month. I took it, felt better but had the worst menstrual period ever with heavy bleeding and cramps. I stopped the medicine the next month and my attacks began again. We are trying to conceive now, and I need to know whether I can continue these medicines? What else should I do?
I had 2 chemical pregnancies past 6 months. I conceived but had asthma alongwith it. I was given nebulizer and an injection in the hospital both the times. And I dont know whether that affected the implantation.

Brief Answer:
You should continue the medicines

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Asthma is a condition which can aggravate in pregnancy, so if it is controlled on drugs, you need to continue the drugs in pregnancy also.
Deriphylline is category C drug which means that the animal studies have shown risk for the fetus, however no controlled studies have been performed in humans.
Montenegro LC is monteleukast which is a pregnancy category B drug and no adverse effects are shown in fetus in animal studies.
Seroflow contains steroid which is a pregnancy category D drug which means that adverse effects on human fetus have been found in human studies.
However, all these drugs can be taken in preconceptional period and during pregnancy, if the benefits to mother outweighs the risk associated.
In your case, you should continue taking these drugs as your asthma has to be kept under control while trying to conceive or while pregnant.
I would suggest you to start folic acid tablet now as it decreases the risk of congenital anomalies in the fetus.
Moreover, do get a detailed anomaly ultrasound at18-20 weeks of pregnancy to rule out any congenital anomalies.

Brief Answer:
High protein diet and folic acid

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX thanks for responding. Folic acid tablet comes by brand names like folvite, folgel, Biopreg F etc. Folvite is plain folic acid while others contain DHA also. Either can be taken.
High protein and nutritious diet full of green vegetables, milk and milk products should be taken while trying to conceive. Caffeine, tea, cigarette smoking, alcohol should be avoided.
You can perform breathing exercises for asthma.
Seven seas also contains folic acid along with other vitamins and minerals, and you can take it while trying to conceive.

Wishing you good health.
