Suggest Treatment For Bad Cold And Coughing Of Blood
Question: I had a bad cold last week and was coughing badly.Although I took no medication, the cold and cough are gone now.But I have been coughing up small amounts of fresh blood along with sputum for the last 3 days and this occurs only in the early morning hours.Last month I did my annual master health check up including chest xray and things looked normal.I'm an occassional smoker and take alcohol twice or thrice a week.Coughing up blood after severe cold is a regular problem of mine once every year for the last many years during winter.I had visited doctors in the past but things appeared normal. But I'm worried because of this regular happening. Can you please let me know if this is a serious condition?
Brief Answer:
Investigations can help to know if its serious or not.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Without investigations it would be just guess work. X Ray is good for screening, but can miss lots of things.
In this situation, three things can be suggested-
1.Good clinical evaluation of ear nose and throat by ENT specialist. Even these organs can cause bleeding on coughing.
2. Get sputum analysis done to see type of cells or any infection in sputum.
3. Get a CT scan of chest done. This will help rule out chest lesion.
These investigations will help you know whether this serious or just related to cold. I am suggesting this particularly in view of smoking.
Hope this helps.Regards.
