Suggest Treatment For Balanitis

Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: A skin doctor prescribed me doxycycline by the name of DOXY 1 LDR-FORTE for my acne. Two days into it, I started feeling itchy on my foreskin. Two more days later, I saw red rash on my glans penis, with slight wetness on it, possibly a discharge. I went to another doctor, who asked me to stop Doxy immediately and has put me on azithromycin 100mg and an anti-histamine for one week while applying myprocin ointment on my rash. And asked me to take a single dose of fluconazole 150mg at the end of one week. I'm on day 3 of this treatment for infection, how soon can I expect this to go away? How longer should I wait for any sexual activity after the rash has disappeared completely?

Brief Answer:
You can resume sexual activity when the rash vanishes.

Detailed Answer:
Dear User,

The fact is that you have contracted a fungal infection and have developed a balanitis (infection of the glans penis). This infection is iatrogenic, this means that it has been caused by another medication.

Please methodically take your course of Azithromycin and the anti-histaminic drug, in tandem to applying muciprocin ointment. Kindly take your dose of Fluconazole. Monitor your foreskin for any tightening, if you take the above medications in time, you should have no problems at all. the problem with fungal infections is that if you do not treat them on time they have a tendency to cause "fibrosis" i.e. tightened bands across the foreskin.

The rash will vaporize in a short time since you are just on day 3 of the regimen.

You can resume sexual activity once the rash subsides and you feel comfortable.

Considering all other factors, you're OK.

Regards,
Dr. Neel Kudchadkar

thanks.
please tell me if just a single 150mg dose of fluconazole enough for recovery?
Also, my partner performed oral sex on me the day before I saw the rash, what precautions or medication should my partner take, though there are no signs of infection being visible on my partner.

Brief Answer:
You are absolutely right. Take Fluconazole with confidence.

Detailed Answer:
Dear User,

Congratulations on your attention to detail.

As for fluconazole, I would say that a single dose of 150 mg will suffice to solve your problem. Within 3 days you should begin to show a vast improvement and in the next 4 days we are talking about a perfect cure and a healthy organ.

As for your partner, there is an XXXXXXX saying : "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
Since the infection, to begin with was caused due to a medical mistreatment, I would say with confidence, that you are NOT TRANSMITTING a sexually transmitted disease. If any infection could have occurred in your partner, then it would have manifested by now. In case of a very remote chance of an infection occurring, a local doctor would probably give her Ketaconazole medication to
instantly get rid of any issues or problems.

You're quite healthy in all other respects, according to me.

yes, the rash is visibly smaller today with just two distinct red spots visible now.
and No, my partner isn't showing any sign of infection.
last question, if doxy for my acne caused balanitis, should I assume any antibiotic can do the same to me? what can be my alternate treatment for acne. I think it is because of my oversized pores that I get acne, blackheads n hence uneven skin tone.

Brief Answer:
You probably can pick anti-acne OTC's to your hearts content.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

It's great to meet you again.
I'm positive your rash will vanish in a very short time and you can resume sexual activities in that order.

Having put that in place, let's eliminate the acne.
As you are aware of, acne is an infection. An antibiotic taken by mouth will cause it to vanish and yet create some other occult problems, as you've experienced.

1. Please wash and dry your face everyday.
2. Kindly look for cosmetic products that say "noncomedogenic". Purchase only
these. Ignore the others no matter how appealing they are, because they can make the acne worse.
3. Please do not scratch or repeatedly touch comedones because these actions might result in scarring.
4. Try to change your diet.
5. Please decrease your stress levels.
6. Explore laser therapies and photodynamic therapies, if available to you at a reasonable price.
7. Avail yourself of dermabrasion therapies, and it's variations. I am sure this is available to you in XXXXXXX
8. Benzoyl peroxide cream is available. This works very well for some people.
It has to be locally applied to the affected skin.

Please follow the above instructions, and prepare yourself for a healthy life.
Take care of your health.
