Suggest Treatment For Barometric Headaches And Sinus Pressure
Question: Greetings. I am one of those people who has suffered my whole life from what is called barometric headaches. Virtually every time there is heavy cloud cover before rain I end up with a regular headache plus sinus pressure, and get relief from Sudafed or regular pseudephedrine with aspirin/tylenol. What is it about the weather change that creates these headaches and a feeling of tiredness?! Thanks.
Brief Answer:
The culprit is atmospheric pressure change.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.
Wheather change headaches, or barometric pressure headaches are related to imbalances of brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) mainly Serotonin.
Usually these are migraine headaches triggered by wheather changes, or may be triggered by altitude changes too.
The culprit is the change of atmospheric pressure.
Hope I helped you understand better your condition. Best regards.

Thank you Dr. Spaho. You mean that certain people have imbalances of Serotonin affected directly by atmospheric pressure putting pressure on blood vessels in the head and sinus congestion, and causing tiredness?
I have never had migraines, these are just sinus headaches and regular headaches with tiredness that go together, and are also relieved when it starts actually raining.

Is there any way to rebalance the serotonin with supplements, or some other technique in order to avoid these headaches?
Brief Answer:
Sinus headaches are worsened by air humidity too.

Welcome back XXXXXXX
Sinus related headaches can be affected and worsened too, by weather changes, besides migraine.
In this case air humidity and oxygen changes are accused too, besides serotonin changes in brain.
A way to prevent these headaches is to maintain a diary and an evaluation of weather and atmospheric pressure changes by using a digital barometer.
When the weather is about to change, you can use an air ionizier and humidifier at home, or you can have a walk by a river or waterfall if it is possible, since headaches are relieved by rain ( increased air humidity).
When the weather is about to change, you can take an OTC too, to prevent headaches.
Hope I helped. Wishing you good health.
