Question: sir my name is XXXXX now doing postgraduation in pathology.. My grand father(83 yrs) is seriouslly ill for the past 2 months.. Because of not taking food,,he went into semiconscious state and urinary tract infection, for that he was admitted in hospital in banglore, prior to that we noticed small bedsores. They have given antibiotics for urinary tract infection, beacuse of having prostatic hyperplasia and urinary strictures he was placed a small sized foleys catheter.. frequently catheter was blocking.finally they made SPC for urinary outflow..After that size of bed sore was increased.. He was discharged with a ryles tube in the nose kept for feeding.. Now the condition is so much declined...so the bed sores are exposing sacrum and new bed sores are going to happen in the legs(Calf).. Sir my question is,Is there any chances of recovery(if kept in nursing hospital),,if so please tell me the measures

Brief Answer: chances of recovery are there Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXXXX Thanks for writing to HCM. The chances are there, but a bit less, considering this age and nutritional status. Things that can be done to improve this condition are- 1- use a water or air bed to prevent progression on bed sores. 2- frequent change of position, every hour. 3- improve his nutrition (most important), feed every 4th hourly in a propped up position, give a high protein diet. You can give parenteral nutrition for a few days if you want. 4- proper debridement and dressing of bed sores. And twice daily dressing if feasible. 5- keep the back as dry as possible to prevent infections. With all these, the bed sore should start healing and he should start to recover. Hope i have been helpful. Regards Dr. Ashish Verma
