default
Posted on Tue, 20 Dec 2016
Question: I have a bunion on my big toe on my left foot. I also have a great deal of swelling of the foot. There is also a large reddish blister on the outside of the toe. I am diabetic and concerned that it may be an infection. What do you suggest? Thank you

Brief Answer:
Conservative treatments recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I saw your photos.

I suggest the following treatments to alleviate symptoms and possibly to help prevent progression of your bunion.

-- Shoe modification: wide, low-heeled shoes, or specially altered shoes with increased medial pocket for the first joint to minimize deforming forces
-- Orthoses to improve support and alignment
-- Night splinting to improve toe alignment
-- Stretching and/or mobilization/manipulation to maintain joint mobility
-- Medial bunion pads to prevent irritation
-- Ice applied after activity to reduce inflammation
-- Analgesics: acetaminophen or NSAIDs as needed.

If worse or not better, I would recommend seeing a local doctor.

Hope this is helpful.
