Question: My cardiologist told me my heart was weak and that my carotid arteries were 30% blocked. He said my heart was weakened to 40% based on 55% scale. Does this mean I have congested heart failure or could this be caused by potassium or other mineral difiencey? I am a 58 year old female with a history of hypertension.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that heart failure is a clinical syndrome.

The diagnosis of this disorder is mainly based on the clinical symptoms of the patient (shortness of breath, fluid retention, leg swelling, etc.). Do you have any of these symptoms?

The cardiac ultrasound findings are not always in a good correlation with the clinical symptoms.

So, coming to this point, I would like to directly review your cardiac ultrasound if you can upload it, for another professional opinion.

I would also recommend performing a cardiac stress test to investigate for possible coronary artery disease (as atherosclerosis is a generalized process and it seems to have affected your carotid arteries).

Regarding blood electrolytes or mineral deficiencies, they are not related to this clinical scenario.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
