Suggest Treatment For Blocked Ears And Swollen Throat While On Synthroid

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: I am suffering from allergies. It's almost unbearable. I also take synthroid (25 MCG) for my thyroid. I have been told not take any antihistamine drugs while taking synthetic. I can however take a nasal spray at night. I am using Dymista. But I am miserable. My ears are clogged, my throat swollen, my sinuses, my eyes, everything is killing me. I feel like I'm under water.

Is there anything I can do that is really effective? I am so tempted to take an allergy medicine just to not feel this way for a little while.

Brief Answer:
antihistamine with levothyroxine

Detailed Answer:
Hi!

Welcome to health care magic!

I am Dr. Saddiq Ul Abidin. I have read your problem in detail and will try to help you in best way possible.

Using levothyroxine, which is replacement for low natural thyroxine, which is directly involved in increasing heart contractility, and many anti histamines and decongestants have also been found to do the same, so that is one of the reasons for them to be used with caution with eachother.

If thyroid levels are recently checked and are normal or borderline low, then using them together will not be troublesome in that regard.

Also that since most anti histamines aka anti allergic medication cause sedation and low thyroid levels also cause same symptoms so adding them together in the setting of very low levels can cause increased drowsiness, lethargy and sedation.

In your case, if you have the levels checked recently and have been achieved to be near normal with your medication you can use them together. Pseudoephidirine or chlorphenarmine are anti allergic which cause more sedation so in such cases, second generation drugs like cetrizine or loratidine can be used instead for the symptoms you discussed.

Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. kindly rate me before closing, and leave your feedback if possible.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ul abidin.
