Suggest Treatment For Blocked Nose And Mild Headache

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Nov 2014
Question: I had a regular cold 5 days ago (stuffy nose, mild headache no coughing) and summed it up to the change in weather due to the season. I work a job where I am speaking constantly so after 2 days I decided to take a day off. Went back to work the next day and was able to speak by the end of the day. One nostril is really stuffy and I have a a cough ( ie when I take aslow deep inhale I almost feel forced to cough) when I get up in the morning and cough sometimes this really thick phlem comes up. Loosing my voice has now come almost hand in hand with getting sick, this was not the case a few years ago. What's happening to me? I'm 28 years old. The only times in the past when I would become at the very least hoarse is when I drank a lot of alcohol the night before. Please not that when I feel like this I only feel strained in the throat area, congested in the nose area and slight headache. The rest of my body feels fine (I'm in great shape for my age as well as an athlete)

Brief Answer:
Requires interventions and antibiotics.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

With such presentation in my clinic, I would first do laryngoscopy( congestion of larynx to rule out acute laryngitis (loss of voice), xray chest to rule out the cause for phlem (infection), nasal endoscopy to rule out acute sinusitis( stuffy nose).

Once Iam sure this is not life threatening I will start on antibiotics ( laryngitis and sinusitis). For stuffy nose, steam inhalation and nasal decongestants like xylometazoline can be tried.

I advise you to stop taking alcohol and smoking, they can trigger your hoarse voice leading to severe form of laryngitis. Give absolute voice rest. According to findings of investigations other medications can be started.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

I believe it is chronic sinustis. How can I get rid of the phlem that has build up in my throat and vocal chords? Is there a natural remedy and what is the over the counter remedy?

Brief Answer:
ct scan- para nasal sinuses.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

As per your details, post nasal drip of sinusitis can cause pharyngitis, laryngitis and lung infection.

In case of chronic sinusitis ( more than 6 months) you need to do ct scan of paranasal sinuses to know the anatomical abnormality and pathological extent. In case of pansinusitis (all sinuses of both sides), medications will not help.Surgery is the choice.

Kindly go ahead for ct scan of paranasal sinuses.

I hope my answers will help you, all the best. take care.
