Suggest Treatment For Blood In Urine
Question: My mom was told by her PCP that there were micro------ something specs of blood in her urine that you could not see with the naked eye so the doctor sent her for a sonogram. She received a call that her PCP would like her to go to a urologist because they can't really tell from the sonogram. However, his office just called again (his PA) with same results to say they want her seen sooner rather than later because she has echogenic lesions and a tumor but it's out of their scope. It could be very serious or nothing at all. Is this appropriate behavior and how serious could this really be? I'm confused going from we can't really tell to you have lesions and a tumor with the same tests. Any help would be very greatly appreciated.

Hello!
Thank you for the query.
Yes, this is what should be done next. She has blood in the urine and some lesion/tumor/echogenic lesion (all this terms describe the same thing) in her bladder. This is not the bladder cancer diagnose. But it is one possibility. That is why he should see urologist and have cystoscopy done. This test allows to collect samples from this lesion and check them under the microscope. Only after this tests proper diagnosis can be established.
Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

My apologies.....whatever this is, is actually showing on her kidney. I thought I put that in the previous question but I did not. I would assume that would make a difference as to what procedure would follow next.

Yes, indeed. Kidney lesion needs further diagnostics which is abdominal CT. This test usually allows to tell if its a cancer or not. Usually biopsy is not performed.
So instead of urologist consult, she should have CT. Urologist should be visited when she will have the result of this test.

Ok, her PCP is sending her with the tests she has had so for (sonogram only NO CT scan yet) to the urologist first. The PA in the PCP's office is the one that has been talking to my mom (I've spoken with her too) and the PA also told me they want her to see the urologist first with the tests she's had so far and I just want to make sure this is going as it should.

Well, this is not a bad idea. Please note that I have not seen the ultrasound. This makes my opinion less valuable than your doctors.
She may visit urologist first. If he will decide to do CT, she will have to do it.
In my opinion if the doctor who did the ultrasound was not sure abouth the kidney lesion, either wont be the urologist and CT will be necessary.
