Suggest Treatment For Body Itching

Question: Would you suggest this drug for a mild to moderate itching with a 86 yr old man with stage 4 kidney failure.?
He has also been given a cream/ containing steroid to rub in his affected shoulder /back area. It seems to me that the medication is over kill and symptoms a little frightening. Your advice? This was prescribed by a GP he sees a nephrologist and is in general dong well . Prior he has been taking one benedryl at hs for itching.
Brief Answer:
Skin emollient or moisturising cream will help
Detailed Answer:
Hi.Thanks for writing on HCM.
Itching is often due to the waste products(uric acid etc) that are not removed due the decreased renal function in CKD.
Since the itching is mild to moderate I were to suggest a skin emollient, moisturizing cream or bath oil which is also the standard of care.I would not prefer a steroid cream in you case.
Bendryl can be safely taken but at the dose and dosage prescribed by you doctor.I were to suggest to take a tablet if you donot get relief on application of emollient/moisturizing cream.
Hope this answers your query.Get well soon.
