Suggest Treatment For Breathlessness, Headache, Fatigue And Severe Night Sweats

Question: I am 25 year olds and have been experiencing shortness of breath, headache, fatigue, severe night sweats, and arm numbness while laying down for the past month. This morning I woke up to my nose bleeding which lasted for about 30 minutes. It bled once again a little while ago. I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow, but I am wondering if I should just go to the ER. I have been on Lexapro for a few months, could this be from the medication?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that most of your complaints (headache, fatigue, night sweats, etc) may be adverse effects of your medication (Lexapro).

Regarding this abnormal bleeding, it may be also an adverse effect of Lexapro (which in fact in encountered in less than 1% of patients).

Lexapro may also exacerbate hypertension, which from its part may deteriorate the above complains (including bleeding).

I recommend you to check your blood pressure and if bleeding is persistent and evident you should go to the nearest ER service for a careful medical examination, some lab tests and eventually an appropriate management of bleeding.

I also recommend consulting with your prescribing doctor about the above potential side effect to see the opportunity of changing for a safer alternative.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of further uncertainties, feel free to ask me again.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
