Question: My 12 year old daughter got a urine infection when we went on vacation in the Dominican Republic, as she was having her period. Dr prescribed CEFRADOXIL 5 days. the burning never really went away. This has been going on for 2 months, 4 urine and culture test done all came back negative. Gave her Bactrim for 5 days as we were sure it was an infection but when it came back negative Dr said stop the antibiotics that by the way were no doing any thing significant. Put cream for yeasts infection etc....took baths with baking soda, drank lemon juice, cranberry, parsley, put probiotics..... still no improvement still burning.. what to do! No fever.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your 12 years old daughter has burning urination since 4 months and have been prescribed various antibiotics with no improvement in her symptoms.

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on her problem.
1) Is she taking any medications?
2) Does she have urgency, hematuria in addition to burning urination?

In view of her routine urine tests and culture being negative for any organisms this can be considered as Abacterial Non Infectious Cystitis.
The etiology of this is not known but may be due
1) Using Bubble baths
2) Feminine hygiene sprays
3) Use of sanitary napkins..
4) fungal infection.

Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical assessment and get following basic tests done to trace out the cause of her symptoms.
1) Repeat Urine culture
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis
3) He may do endoscopic examination of Bladder (Cystoscopy).

Please give her Urinary antiseptic like Pyrideum or Nitrofurantoin twice daily and anti cholenergic drugs like Solifenacin once daily

She may be benefited by bladder training and pelvic floor exercises (Kegel Exercises)

Ensure that she drinks more water to keep her urine dilute. This will also help to reduce dysuria..

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Hello, No she is not on any antibiotic. Because there was no infection in the urine culture and test, they did not give her anything. Yes- she does get sometimes the urgency to urinate on top of the burning. The medication you are suggesting, is that an antibiotic.
Thank you

She also says that sometimes she feels that when she urinates something moves or opens in the entry or her urethra. Could something be blocked there and the urine is dislodging it maybe which makes the urine flow seem larger .....

Do you think that since this happened during a vacation that some sand could have gotten in the urethra, or can the burning come from a cut or blister there....If so how can these 2 hypotheses be treated ....If this makes any sense to you at all...
Thank you
