Suggest Treatment For Cerebral Palsy

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Jan 2017
Question: Hi, I have a mild case of cerebral palsy, it effects only my muscle movement on my left side. I walk with a mild limp. My cognition is perfectly fine. My condition rarely interferes with my day to day life. I have noticed when I am nervous or uncomfortable my limp tends to become more pronounced. Any idea what causes this. I heard botox injection may be able to help with muscle tightness, is this true. I really have not gotten any treatment for my cp since I was a child,.what type of doctor should I consult with about my condition. I know this is a long post. I truly appreciate the time.

Brief Answer:
Information

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Not a long post at all!

It is very common, with any neuromuscular disorder, to have heightening of symptoms when under stress, sleep deprivation - really any stressors, both physical (including fevers, etc) and emotional. Truly stress seems to make any problem worse.

Now about the type of doctor to consult for updates in treatments that are available these days, you will of course need a physician who specializes in adult cerebral palsy (i.e. you are not needing someone who addresses early development issues). There are a number of different types of doctors who address some of the various problems that can be associated with cerebral palsy including neurologists and physical medicine and rehab (PMandR) specialists.

I don't know what your insurance allows, but I looked up that you are at Staten Island NY, and perhaps you could investigate the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center at XXXXXXX They seem to be comprehensive and address the needs of all ages. I found this article about them: http://www.columbiamedicinemagazine.org/clinical-advances/spring-2013/forgotten-adults-cerebral-palsy-center-their-own

I hope this information helps.
