Suggest Treatment For Cervical Cancer And Swelling In One Leg

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question: Hi! Two and a half years ago, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer (squamous). I was staged at 2A2, node negative. I completed chemo, radiation, and had a hysterectomy. All pathology and scans since then have been negative for cancer/metastasis. Lately, I've been having swelling in one leg, and it seems to be worse depending on the weather (heat), and my level of activity. My GynOnc think it's lymphedema, and has referred me to a PT. My GP concurs that it's likely lymphedema or a venous insufficiency. I'm worried that it's nodal metastasis (I can't feel any enlarged nodes, but it's not like all lymph nodes are able to be felt). Should I press for a CT scan (my last scan was in February, and was clear)? Thanks....

Brief Answer:
CT can be done

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Unilateral leg swelling can be due to venous insufficiency, deep venous sinus thrombosis, lymphatic derangement, filariasis and local compression. In view of history of cervical cancer and radiotherapy two possibilities are lymphatic swelling or metastasis to lymph nodes. As swelling decreases with rest and limb elevation possibility of lymphatic obstruction is more. I
suggest you to try physiotherapy for some time.
Contrast CT may be done but after consultation.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
