Question: When I turn my head early in the morning, sometimes after being still, but most often in the morning, I hear what I can describe as a scanning sound from the base of the skull. I turn more and stretch by moving my head in a circle, and it quits. Lately I hear it often, and cannot understand how it seems like bone against bone. No pain. By the presence of the question online I have found that others must have the same question.
I am XXXXXXX and want to know if I should see my doctor and get a referral.

Brief Answer:
you may need to see your doctor if treatment described is not sufficient.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX ,
I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.

The Problem you just described occurs in later stage of cervical spondylosis especially between C1 and C2, Sometimes between C1 and base of skull. To diagnose the exact condition we need X-rays / CT Scan of the cervico-basal spine.

In my opinion start isometric neck exercises, hot fomentation and take one painkiller at night. If the problem is not solved, go for a consultation.

Thanks for the question. Please feel free to ask any other question.
