Posted on Fri, 5 Aug 2016
Question: Ladt night stsrted getting chest pain which i have had before and heart issues have been completley ruled out.
Pain/discomfort started high up in chest, through the night i couldn't sleep and started sweating and was clamy on and off.
Took an antacid, which took edge off and i was able to sleep for a few hours.
Woke up with high upper chest pain and the sorest throat with raspy voice.
Hoarseness went away soon after, throat not sore but i have a dry cough and coughing up a bit of green phelgm.
It feels very uncomfortable on my chest. And i am converned as to what it is.
I recently had an URTI but did not experience any kind of chest discomfort.
I was given ammoxicillian but stopped taking after 5 days as it was guving me diahorrea and terrible gas.
Should i start the antibiotic again?

Thank you in advance.

Brief Answer:
Gastritis, GERD

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

Based on your symptoms, I would like to rule out gastritis with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Would you please clarify a few things for me?
-what is your height and weight?
-are your bowel movements otherwise normal (except for when you took the antibiotics, that is)?
-do you have any other medical issues or take any other medication?
-do you have a sedentary job?

I recommend :
- a physician consult
-blood tests (kidney and liver function tests)
-urine analysis
-Proton pump inhibitors like pantoprazole at bedtime for 10 days.
-avoid spicy, oily, fried and bitter foods.
-avoid caffeine (at least on an empty stomach), sugary and carbonated drinks.
-milk is a natural antacid and is good for relieving symptoms of gastritis. Consume it cool.
-stay well hydrated (about 3litres a day throughout the day).
-Have smaller but more frequent meals. Avoid skipping meals and staying on an empty stomach for too long.

Sometimes an illness and concurrent antibiotic therapy may trigger an episode. There is no need to Continue antibiotics
If all these measures don't help or you if it recurs, an endoscopy may be necessary to check for GERD.

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health,

Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
