Suggest Treatment For Chest Pain And Diarrhea

Question: I have a granddaughter calling me from a long way away - she is 19 and complaining about a sharp chest pain on both sides and diarrhea - it is night time and not sure if she should go to ER - has no insurance :-( YYYY@YYYY

Note - pain came on suddenly and seems to be worse laying down - even goes thru to back

she says it makes it hard to breathe.

pain seems to be migrating to back now?

Hello dear,

Thanks for your question on HCM. I can understand her situation and problem.

The most common cause for diarrhoea is viral infection. So possibility of viral bronchitis along with diarrhoea due to same virus.

In bronchitis, bronchospasm occurs and it causes bilateral chest pain and difficulty to breath.
So we need to rule out this.

Diarrhoea, if not controlled timely can lead to dehydration and further complications.

So she should consult doctor and start appropriate treatment for diarrhoea (intravenous fluids).
Chest x ray and clinical examination of respiratory system is needed to rule out viral bronchitis. And she may need inhaled bronchodilators and antibiotic.

So my advice for her is to visit emergency department and rule out all these and start appropriate treatment.
