default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: I was very ill with the flu and a stomach/intestinal virus. I can eat well, but am left with nasty chills and night sweats. Tylenol handles the chills, but what can I do to make them stop?

Brief Answer:
indicates underlyng infection still present

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Fever and chills are part of the body's inflammatory response to infection or severe trauma.

These symptoms occur because the organism causing the particular infection cause the body to produce chemicals that then cause the body temperature to go up.

The continued presence of fever and chills imply that you still have an infection even if most of your symptoms have resolved.

These symptoms would resolve as the infection continues to improve. The main aspect of treatment would be continuation of symptomatic medication- the tylenol. This can be used 1g every 4 to 6 hours depending on the dose you are using.

In addition, the use of copious fluids preferably cool or cold (to help with the temperature) and rest would be the only additional treatment.

If the symptom continues, your doctor may want to determine if there is another underlying infection or inflammatory condition causing persisting fever.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any additional questions
