Detailed Answer:
Hi,thank you for posting your query on HealthcareMagic,
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.
Looking at your symptoms, you might be suffering from Laryngospasm.
It is is an uncontrolled/involuntary muscular contraction (spasm) of the vocal folds.] The condition typically lasts less than 60 seconds, but in some cases can last 20-30 minutes and causes a partial blocking of breathing in, while breathing out remains easier.
It may be associated with different triggers, such as asthma, allergies, exercise, irritants (smoke, dust, fumes),viral infection in the nose/sinuses,stress, anxiety or commonly gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD).
When Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is the trigger, treatment of GERD can help manage laryngospasm.
Proton pump inhibitors such as Pantoprazole, Esomeprazole and Lansoprazole reduce the production of stomach acids, making reflux fluids less irritant.
Avoid common heartburn triggers, such as fruit and fruit juices, caffeine, fatty foods, and peppermint.
Eat smaller meals, and stop eating two to three hours before bedtime.
Smoking can also cause irritation leading to Laryngospasm.
It would be advisable to quit smoking.
Viral infection in the nose/sinuses may lead to the nasal discharge draining back in the cause(posterior nasal drip) leading to irritation and laryngospam. In that case, you may get relief by taking Decongestant like Pseudoephedrine(take decongestant only if you are not suffering from Hypertension) and Mucolytic like Ambroxol.
Allergic reaction of the Airway which occurs on exposure to Allergens might be another cause. In that case ,avoidance of exposure to Allergic substances(like certain foods, dust, etc) and Oral Antihistaminic tablet like Cetrizine will help you.
Spontaneous laryngospasm can be treated by staying calm and breathing slowly, instead of gasping for air.
Drinking (tiny sips) of ice water to wash away any irritants that may be the cause of the spasm can also help greatly.
Also do steam inhalation.
Hope this answers your question.I would be happy to answer if you have any follow-up questions.
