Suggest Treatment For Chronic Constipation In A Toddler

Question: I have a 33 month grandson who seems to have chronic constipation. I visit him once or twice a month, this seems to be every time I visit. It has been a concern for me since he was an infant. I have noticed him struggle for a day or two without success. Mother not concerned since he only goes once every 3-5 days.
I have noticed dark black stools.Child says no when changing diaper. Should this be checked and what type of stool softner or laxative can be given? Diet seems to be mostly takeout or processed as far as I see, I give him vegetables and fruit during my visits.

Brief Answer:
Stool tests should be done
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Can understand your concerns.
Dark black stools suggest blood in stools which could be due to intestinal infection, upper gastrointestinal bleed or worms infestation, foods containing omega 3, 6, 9.
You should do stool routine microscopy test and stool for occult blood.
For constipation, diet rich in fibres should be given like salads.
In my opinion, you should give syrup lactulose 5 ml three times a day for one day for constipation. Further treatment will depend on above reports.
I hope this will help you.
Take care.
