Suggest Treatment For Chronic Folliculitis In The Groin Area

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Feb 2017
Question: Hello. I have often developed what healthcare providers say are probably ingrown pubic hairs which turn into little pimples, sometimes coming to a head and otherwise disappearing on their own. Most agree that this is folliculitis and no treatment has been recommended except to keep the area clean, wear loose underwear that doesn't rub, and avoid touching them. But lately at least two of them have grown into palpable cysts deep under the skin surface and another is clearly pus-filled and hasn't changed in size or appearance for months. Should I keep waiting for these to resolve or do I need to have a doctor treat them? If so, shall I contact my GP or a gynecologist?

Brief Answer:
Either one can treat them- depends on the services that the office offers

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

Those are chronic folliculitis.
The treatment would be to drain the pus or remove the cysts that are formed there. This procedure can be done either by a GP or a gynecologist (depends on the supplies they have in the office because it is considered minor surgery and may need suturing if the cysts are larger then 1 cm).

If they do not cause pain or discomfort, it is not recommended to touch them only for cosmetic purposes, because with the time they will be absorbed and heal by itself. The procedure may cause an infection of the skin or other complications. But anyway, it is your decision after all.

Hope this is helpful.
