Suggest Treatment For Chronic Insomnia
Question: I am a 68 yr old female in good health, no mental issues, but have had chronic insomnia most of my adult life, not depressed and i am never tired either. Into wellness, eat an excellent diet and supplement with probiotics B, C D and others and exercise regularly. I have taking xanax only at night for sleep for about 25 years. Dose is usually only .25 every second day. In my 30's i took .5 at night for about 10 yrs straight. I wonder if there are any long term effects at this low dose? I can go off it completely for weeks and have no withdrawal. It really helps put me to sleep. Recently I read that taking benedryl for 4 yrs causes one to be more at risk for developing dementia. This concerns me as i usually alternate my xanax with Benedryl. My mind is very clear right now. Would long term xanax use have the same effect as Benedryl. I am hoping not. Should i stay on the xanax or get off of it or doesn't it matter.
Brief Answer:
it can cause dementia too.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
Long term use of xanax (alprazolam) can cause dementia. Though the chances are very less (less than 2%), possibility is there.
And chances are increasing if you are using with other drug (benadryl) which can also cause dementia.
So better to avoid it. And you can manage well without it, so no point of taking it.
So stop xanax , it is not a good drug for long term use if you are able to manage without it.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
