Suggest Treatment For Chronic Sore Throat

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Jul 2015
Question: I have had a chronic sore throat (the swallowing razor blades pain) and swollen glands for over a month. I was first given a Z-pac and completed that treatment with no improvement. The doctor now has me taking 875 mg of amoxicillin twice a day. This is day 5 of the treatment and there is absolutely no improvement whatsoever. I wake up nightly because I'm crying out in my sleep from the pain. What else could be causing this if it's not an infection that can be treated with an antibiotic?

Brief Answer:
Have you been evaluated for acid reflux disease?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this chronic pain that you have reported. This could be caused by acid reflux inflammation of the throat and oesophagus. This manifest with pains especially during swallowing. It may also cause a chronic irritative cough and the sensation of fluids returning to the mouth. If you have not been evaluated and treated for this, I will recommend that you try omeprazole. Take omeprazole at doses recommended by your pharmacist. If this is the cause of your symptoms, you would notice significant improvement. If this fails to address the pain, I will recommend that you see a gastro-enterologist for an upper endoscopy. This way, they would look into all these passages to see what the cause of your pain is and address accordingly. Failed Zpack and amoxicillin makes the cause of this pain not likely to be infectious.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
