Suggest Treatment For Cold And Cough In A Child
Question: Hi.
My daughter is only six (6) ½ months old. She has been coughing continuously since Wednesday 24 Sept 2014.
Yesterday, we went to see her pediatrician and he prescribed her a nebulizer (Norsol Saline 2ML, Ipramid 0.3ML and Ventolin 0.3ML), along with Afrin Nosedrop, Piriton Syrup, and Ace Syrup (for fever or pain).
After the visit in the afternoon (Thursday 25 Sept 2014), my daughter had a mild fever in the evening, and we gave her the Ace Syrup as said. All was well, until this evening (Friday Sept 26 2014), she has been crying with signs of pain in her face (almost an hour after we used the nebulizer).
As parents, it is difficult to watch her cry because she almost never cries even in severe pain. So we are actually very concerned and wish she could speak and tell us what was wrong.
Is there any good doctor on this website who can assess her situation from the information I have provided here? I am willing to provide more information if necessary.
She is having difficulties being breastfed because of her blocked nose. We have tried using Norsol Saline and Afrin nose drops, but the cold is still there.
Our main concerns are the cough and mild fever (which seems to come back every now and then). The thick cough is almost always there which she cannot expel.
Our daughter also has eczema which is being treated separately.
Please advise.

Brief Answer:
check for throat and ear infection
Detailed Answer:
Hi
thanks for writing to us.
I understand your baby is going through a lot of pain.
Usually cold and cough is viral at this age and can last even upto 5 days.
The medicines your doc had prescribed are appropriate for cold, cough , nasal block and pain and fever. Nebulizer will help loosen the sputum.
But if she continues to cry in pain, her throat and ears need to be examined for evidence of infection.
If positive , she may benefit from a course of antibiotics like amoxicillin.
Continue other medicines meanwhile and give her plenty of liquids to keep her hydrated.
Wishing her speedy recovery.
Regards
