Suggest Treatment For Cold And Cough In A Toddler
Question: Hi Doctor,
My son is 1.11 years old weighing 12kg. He is suffering from cold and cough. Doctor prescribed to give Promethazine syrup IP(phenergan) 3ml - only at night, Cetirizine Syrup IP 3ml - only in the evening. Since he slept in the evening i gave both the medicine together in the night. He felt as sleep with in 10 mins. Is it a problem?

Brief Answer:
Do not worry
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the HCM
I understand your concerns but don't worry. He will be fine. Promethazine and cetirizine both are drugs which cause sedation. So, avoid giving them together at the recommended doses in future.
I recommend my patients Syp. Maxtra or T minic 2.5 ml thrice daily. They are more acceptable and safe to toddlers.
Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.

Brief Answer:
Avoid drugs for mild cough and cold
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Since most coughs and colds in this age group are due to self limiting viral infections, we do not recommend any treatment.
But if it's bothering him a lot, then just giving Syp. Promethazine or cetirizine 2.5 ml twice daily
(morning and night) is enough. I am not in favour of any combination of drugs as suggested by your pediatrician as it doesn't have any added advantage. These drugs do have many side effects but they are usually seen in over doses and rarely. So, don't worry.
Hopefully this will help you.

Will he feel drowsy tomorrow morning when he wake up or he will be normal? Sorry for bothering you doctor so much worried
Brief Answer:
He may sleep a bit more than usual
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Since the drugs have sedative action, so he may sleep a bit longer than expected. But don't worry, that's perfectly acceptable. There after he should be normal.
You may ask any further questions if required. I would be glad to help you out.
