Suggest Treatment For Cold, Cough And Pressure In Chest During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Dec 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,

I am in 5th month of pregnancy. About a month ago I got cold followed by cough. Cold got fine in few days but the cough is still there.
I tried taking medicines like: Honeytus, Sinarest(PD), homeopathy steam and salt water gargles for few days. But there is no relief. Instead, the cough has increased since yesterday.
Since yesterday, the cough frequency is more and I feel some pressure in chest. Once or twice I also felt white phlegm in mouth while coughing.
Please advice on what safe medicines I can take to get relief.

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Precautions advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs. XXXX, thanks for trusting health care magic.
It is not a good sign to have a persistant cough for such a long period.
In my opinion you have probably got chronic bronchitis after a long standing respiratory tract infection.
You basically need a puff of steroid (like those used by asthmatics) for a week or two after consulting a medical specialist.
Don't be scared as you have nor developed asthma at all and it is just a common symptom resembling asthma and thus treated similarly.
Local steroid via inhaler will relieve inflammation and also decrease the sensitivity to local allergens in air.
Also take a note of following points -
- avoid cold beverages at all times
- take soothing lozenges like strepsils repeadly
- avoid spicy food
- avoid outside food specially which is cold and not heated properly like chutney, sauces, curd and salads
- steam inhalation at least twice a day
- avoid polluted areas or wear a mask or handkerchief in those areas if at all accidentally exposed.
Take it seriously and visit a medical specialist at the earliest.
Take care.

Thanks so much doctor for your prompt reply.

Just wanted to know if these steroids are safe for the baby.
Because I have been avoiding allopathy medicines thinking that they may not be good for the baby.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Safe for both mother and baby

Detailed Answer:
Steroids are given in very low dose for a limited period of time and that too administered locally via pump which hardly reaches the maternal blood so no effect on the baby at all.
So that is not an issue and thus you can safely opt for it.
