Brief Answer:
need testing

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
It certainly sounds like you could have asthma and allergies. It is not that common to get diagnosed with asthma at 58 but it does happen, especially in people who have had it as a child.
You probably need to be on asthma specific medications like albuterol or an inhaled steroid, but first you need pulmonary function testing.
If you are a smoker it could also be COPD but in any case you need to get the pulmonary function testing done. If your primary care doctor does not do this in the office then they can send you to a pulmonologist to get it done.
The over the counter antihistamines are fine to take but with your symptoms persisting you really need to get a diagnosis to get proper treatment.
Please see your doctor soon for testing.
I wish you the best,
Dr. Robinson
