Suggest Treatment For Constant Cough And Burning Feeling In Tongue And Throat
I have recently had a constant cough that kept me up all night. I began taking NYQUIL and cough drops. Now the cough has subsided but my tongue feels burned as well as my throat and it's rough to eat and swallow. I'm wondering, is this something I should worry about? My medical insurance doesn't start for 2 weeks. Is there anything you can recommend to help with this problem over the counter?
Vitamin B-complex and Strepsils
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Acute cough (<3 weeks) is most commonly due to a respiratory tract infection. Subacute cough (3–8 weeks duration) is frequently due to postinfectious cough, the residuum from a tracheobronchitis.
Repeated coughing however produces inflammation which produces discomfort, which in turn produces more coughing.
What you are left with are sore tongue and sore throat -a fall out of repeated coughing. These will subside eventually,if you don't have other symptoms like fever, sputum production etc.
A course of Vitamin B-complex will help reduce glossitis.
Over the counter cough lozenges like Strepsils which contains menthol will help. You could also do warm saline gargles thrice daily or use Betadine mouth gargle as well for symptomatic relief.
