Suggest Treatment For Constipation And Weight Loss While Treating Parkinson's Disease

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Apr 2015
Question: I have Parkinsons Disease. I was diagnosed 15 years ago but still seem to be in stage 1. My biggest problem is constipation. I am currently using Miralax but am steadily losing weight in spite of eating well balanced meals. It seems like I was having some weight loss just before I started Miralax about 6 week ago but nevertheless I have went from 170 lbs to 160. I did not see weight loss as a side effect. The Mirapex works for my constipation but the weight loss concerns me. Thank you for your time. Cordially, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Cause of weight loss needs to be evaluated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXXXXX

I have noted your diagnosis, symptoms and current medications.

The weight loss is unrelated to Parkinson's disease or medications or constipation.

We need to investigate the possible causes for weight loss in you.

This would require assessing whether your diet is adequate.

Investigations should be done to exclude thyroid disorders, high blood sugars, poor absorption of nutrients in the gut and any malignancy.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
