Suggest Treatment For Cough And Running Nose In A Child
Question: My 3 year old son, wt 18 kg, had recurrent cough and running nose.
Doctor has put on budesal 0.5m twice daily for 1 mnth and then once daily for budesal .5mg for 4 months.
I have completed 2 months now of budesal treatment and can see improvements with no running nose however sometimes he does heavy/like long breath.
Boy is perfectly ok and do lots of activities/running. Doctor say to continue nebulization with budesal .5mg for another 3 months and do it once a day.
Doctor checks the kid only by stethoscope but checks kid very well.
I have following 4 queries please:
1. Shall I get xray also done for my kid? and consult some other doctor too.
2. Is it like my kid is suffering from asthma?
3. Is it curable after an age or it will remain there for lifelong?
4. Is it like my kid have to use these medicines for lifelong?
Kindly advise please?

Brief Answer:
Xray yes.
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Recurrent cold and cough with wheezing is common in kids at this age.
1. If not done before, one xray is mandatory.
2. Most of these wheezers are transient and will settle by 5 years. Some end up in asthma ( no way to predict who will require treatment after 5 years)
3. As I said many recover by 5 years. Some persist for long.
4. May not require lifelong. 80 percent will be controlled in 6 months to 1 year treatment.
Follow your doctors advice. Do not stop medicines without his advice.
Your doc is treating well.
Continue with him.
Wishing your child good health.
