Question: Hi I am a 43 year old woman in good health. I have very bad allergies. But, right now I don't have watery eyes ect.. I do not feel sick. However, I have been constantly coughing, Also my chest is uncomfortable. It almost feels swollen and sensitive to touch in the middle of my chest about where the thymus would be I think. Could asthma cause that. My business just had to relocate because a bar opened up next door. The smoke was coming in our building so we had to move. That had only occurred over the last few weeks. We have moved but the coughing has gotten worse.

Brief Answer:
Very unlikely to be asthma!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this cough the you have reported. I have reviewed the information fully but this is not suggestive of a possible asthma attack. Asthma is more acute and difficulties in breathing is almost constant. Given your susceptible nature to allergies, this sounds more like irritation in the windpipe which is responsible for this cough. This might have been provoked by the smoking or something new in the new location depending on when it started.

I will suggest that you get evaluated for this to make sure there is no infection or any other cause that needs immediate attention. If these are addressed, then further efforts would be to identify the culprit and address. Also, if nothing threatening is identified, we will gain more time to understand more. However, we can also prescribe cough suppressants if you think the cough is too frequent and interrupts normal live significantly.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
