Question: I have had a cold and today I have been coughing a lot is it possibly that I could break a blood vessel in my throat? I just had blood when I coughed but it feels like it came from my throat not my chest

Brief Answer:
It's likely injury due to excessive cough

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

The answer is yes. It's not actually a broken blood vessel but an injured throat because of excessive cough and viral (probably) effects on the epithelium (the lining of the airways). This happens mostly on acute bronchitis. The cough may feel like a tear in the throat. If this is mild symptom and does not recur, you shouldn't worry too much. If it happens again, then you should probably ask your doctor to examine you, particularly if you've got high fever.

Blood in the sputum may also be found in pneumonia, which a much more serious infection than acute bronchitis or other common respiratory tract infections and in other serious conditions (like tumors, etc).

I hope I've helped!
