Suggest Treatment For Dandruff Problem And Itchy Scalp
Question: Hi Doctor,
I am having dandruff problem which causes itchy scalp, I am using Selsun shampoo which is of some help, but still doesn't remove all the dandruff and patches are left even after the shampoo. I am not sure if I should try some other shampoo or shall I use some lotion to easily remove all the dandruff before doing a shampoo. Please suggest.

Hi, welcome to Healthcaremagic,
You are suffering from seborrheic dermatitis of scalp. Seborrhea produces plaques of itchy dermatitis with scaling. It is the accumulated scale that we call dandruff.
The cause of seborrhea is unknown, although a yeast Malassezia furfur, is blamed for aggravating the condition.
It can be effectively controlled with antidandruff shampoo.
I usually prescribe cyclopirox oleamine shampoo for rinsing of hair and oxyconazole cream for local application at night.
But these are prescription drug and you need to consult your physician for the prescription of these.
Other condition which causes thick scaling is psoriasis, fungal infection or allergic contact dermatitis.
