Question: When my son was 3 yrs old he was on life support for three days after having a severe allergic reaction to a pre-med.(Vallergan based -this was in 19890 He had surgery for gromits and had his tonsils removed. I was told by consultant anaesthestist) that only other recorded case at the time had come out of coma after 11 hours. My son actualy went into a coma and was not discovered by medical staff but by my husband. At that stafe my son had gone blue around his mouth and was black under his fingernails.

What care should have been taken after this with medications that were prescribed by medical people?
He was prescribed Acne medication when he was 18 yrs old and was never the same after that. He changed completely after that, depression, noises in his head, became addicted to a valuim and subsequenthly took his own life in Sept 2012.
I do not think that due care was ever given to my son as a result of him being in the coma when medication was being prescribed after this incident in 1989

Brief Answer:
He was in need of constant Psychiatric support and counselling.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.

Answer to your first question.

In my opinion, at the time of coma, he was in hypoxia. Hypoxia means low oxygen in body. And this causes rise in carboxyhemoglobin. This gives bluish, black appearance of skin.
So at that time high flow oxygen should be given.
Avoidance of hypoxia should be the goal in such situation.

Answer to your second question.

In my opinion, he was in need of constant Psychiatric support and counselling during his teenage. Along with Valium he should be given other anti depressant drugs to prevent suicidal tendency.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. May God give you courage. Thanks.
