Suggest Treatment For Depression And Headaches

Posted on Sat, 13 Dec 2014
Question: Hi,
My brother,22 years old has been complaining of headache for few years now. I understand that during his last consultation , two years back, he was prescribed an antidepressant course for 3 months. However he took the medicines only for a month and mentioned that he had good relief.
Today when he consulted the doctor, the doc prescribed Stalopam10.
Is this drug safe? Moreover is it recommended at this young age.
Anxiety is something that I have observed in my brother but depression is a bit worrying. As a family history, our aunt (mom's sister) has similar depression issues. Also we lost our mother ten months back and my brother was deeply attached to her.
I need to help my bro. Do suggest. Also if you could recommend a good psychiatrist in XXXXXXX it would be great.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM

In a number of individuals with chronic persisting headache possible cause is tension headache or somatic symptoms of depression. This is the reason he was prescribed anti-depressants.

Now he has developed same symptoms and has been prescribed Stalopam (Escitalopram) 10 mg per day.

The drug belongs to SSRI group of anti-depressants. The drug can cause nausea, abdominal upset, diarrhoea, dizziness, insomnia as side effects. These side effects are usually seen in first few days of starting treatment. Overall its safe and can be prescribed for young age.

Family history of depression increases risk of depression and anxiety. History of death of his mother is also one of important life event which can aggravate depressive disorder.

For Psychiatrist in XXXXXXX you can visit NIMHANS, XXXXXXX There are many good psychiatrists there and will help him.

Brief Answer:
Provide proper supportive care with warm empathetic attitude

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

Yes don't criticise him for his wrong doings, failures or any thing.

Diets rich in protein and carbohydrates and low in fat will help. Such diets increase tryptophan levels in brain and help in improvement.

You can give him Omega 3 Fatty Acid soft gels, Vitamin B12 capsules which will correct the depressive mood.

Relaxation exercises, yoga will increase confidence and will help him.

There are different departments in NIMHANS depending upon type of disorder. Visit mood disorder clinics and he will get good opinion there.

Thanks, hope this helps you.

You can ask again if you have more doubts.
