Posted on Wed, 7 Dec 2016
Question: My son is depressed over a loss of a girlfriend, who has moved on with another guy. Sounds like he should just get over it like everyone else, but he can't stop crying. It's been about 3 weeks, and he says he is done. He says he can't focus can't go to work. I'm worried and scared.

Brief Answer:
I think it is time to seek professional help

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

First of all I feel you will agree me that reaction to loss is quite prolonged and intense than a normal reaction. I mean to say that if anything goes in such a way for two or more weeks we need to think seriously about the implications of such stress reaction following loss.

The presence of difficulty in focusing, avoiding work, persistent and recurrent crying, sadness, need of supervision in daily activities such as eating, bathing and disturbed sleep indicative of depressive reaction.

In my view rather than offering him support only it will be better if you can seek professional consultation. This is essential because I feel there is possibility of full fledged depression which could have devastating effects on his personal as well as professional life.

I hope this helps you.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for my future patients.
