Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea After Antibiotic Intake
Question: I have an eleven month baby, who was prescrived moxclav 2.5 ml twice a day for 5 days - complaint was mild cough and fever, chest congestion. After the 3 dosage, he has loose motions. What should I do?

There is a condition called bronchiolitis which is caused by a virus and is basically a childhood version of the common cold that we suffer from. It affects children between 6 months and 3 years of age. The symptoms that you have mentioned fit in. Since it is a viral condition, it does not respond to antibiotics. But sometimes there might be superadded bacterial infections and so some doctors prefer to give antibiotics to be on the safer side. Unless I can listen to the chest, it is hard to comment on the exact situation.
In any case, since you have started the antibiotic (amoxycillin + clavulinic acid), please continue for the prescribed duration of 5 days. The antibiotic kills the normal beneficial bacteria of our intestines and this imbalance is responsible for the passage of loose stools.
Give the child curd/yogurt which has lactobacilli. You may also like to add Enterogermina (sachet or vial) orally twice daily for 5 days. That will help in getting the passage of loose stool in control. Furthermore, to balance the salt and water loss so caused, please add ORS.
