
Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea After Hip Replacement Surgery

Question: My dad under went hip replacement surgery. Then he developed DVT in right leg. He was on pradaxa and clopitab a but after seeing black stools we stopped pradaxa. Now he is on Clopitab A only. HOw ever, ever since then he is troubled with diarrhea and we used tablets like ricotel, eldoper but none of them helped. Can you please advise what can be done here? Note that his age is 78 and he cannot handle a GI endoscopy and I am not sure what I can do to help him out.
He has diabetes and HIgh blookd pressure. BOth are in control right now. He has stunts in his heart for which he is using rousevas 20 mg once a day. Please advise.

First of all his symptoms may be related to erosive gastritis or stomach ulcer. These two conditions are associated with black stool and diarrhea.
Although your father is 78 years old he should do upper endoscopy to confirm the diagnosis and should start treatmemt (PPI like Pantoprazole and antacids like Malox).
If upper endoscopy exclude severe bleeding than diarrhea is a side effect of Clopidogrel. If this is the case I would recommend to take Effient (Prasugel) instead of Clopidogrel.
