It can occur with some types of infection (gastroenteritis) and it may be best for a stool sample to be sent to the lab for analysis to determine the type of infection that it is present.
Infections such as salmonella or shigella can cause bloody diarrhea
Other causes of blood with diarrhea include: (1)diverticular disease-diverticular are outpouches/pockets that occur in the colon. They occur with age, the diarrhea can become infected or inflamed.
(2)inflammatory bowel disease-crohns disease and ulcerative colitis
(3)If you have hemorrhoids and they are inflamed along with the diarrhea, this can cause bleeding.
This would mostly occur on wiping and would be bright red blood.
Though the diarrhea with blood may not be serious, it would be best to see your doctor for assessment.
This would include physical examination, blood pressure and pulse included,stool assessment- may send a sample to the lab.
Treatment would depend on the cause found
