Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea Caused By Lactose Intolerance In A Child
He faced similar situation last year when his situation improved after antibiotics but worsened as soon as we stopped antibiotics. Reports suggested that he developed lactose intolerance. Is it possible that he has developed lactose intolerance again.
May be lactose intolerance - or recovering viral diarrhea
Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.
It seems your kid is having viral diarrhoea. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better.
Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.
There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhoea.
I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).
Regarding diet - Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhea. You can give zinc supplements & ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridges & soups.
My other suggestions -
1. Unless there is blood in motion there was no need for antibiotics.
2. Improving stool consistency is a sign of recovery.
3. I suggest you give him Probiotics especially Saccharomyces boulaardii.....if you can get back to me with current weight, I will suggest you the dose.
Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.
Dr. Sumanth MBBS., DCH., DNB (Paed).,
Here are his details of his conditions :
1. There was blood in his stool earlier and hence doctor suggested to start antibiotics
2. Please find attached routine and culture stool reports of the baby.
3. He was passing 7-8 stools in a day. As soon as we stopped antibiotic (Taxim O), he started passing 15-16 small quantity stools in a day.
4. We are giving him Enterogermina. Should we replace it with Probiotics especially Saccharomyces boulaardii?
PS : Weight of the baby : 10 Kgs
Enterogermina contains Saccharomyces boulaardii
Detailed Answer:
Hi.... usually antibiotics are started only if there is XXXXXXX blood in the stools. I agree with you that there was two to three RBC in the stool routine, but this might or might not be significant. That is the reason I have mentioned that antibiotics are not required unless there is blood in the stool. Hope you understand what I am telling - I am saying that visible blood in the stool is different from Stool looked at under the microscope.
Please continue using enterogermina for a total of 5 days and thrice per day. Enterogermina is the same probiotic containing saccharomyces boulardii which I was mentioning in our previous interaction.
Apart from this I suggest you use zinc supplement like Z and D drops 1 ml per day for a total of 14 days. This will help in restoring the intestinal lining internally.
