Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea, Fever, Vomiting And Chills
Question: I have had diarrhea for eight days now, was in the hospital for four with IVs, started with fever (102) and chills and vomiting. After three or four days, vomiting, chills and fever went away. Still the cramping, pain and diarrhea remain. They have given me three different antibiotics, I'm currently on Cifran. Plus in the hospital they gave me antispasmodic, proton pump inhibitor, antacid and steroid. My WBC were low on the first blood test and then came to normal on the second but my platelets went to 107 (low they said). I am in a small hill station in XXXXXXX They never did a stool culture so yesterday I went to a lab and had one done. It doesn't show any parasites. The results say RBCS 8-10 SEEN; Mucus: Present; Pus Cells: 32-35 SEEN/H.P.F.; Others: Bacteria ++ SEEN I'm not sure what, if anything, to do at this point to help with the diarrhea. Is it strange to still see bacteria in the stool after five days of antibiotic?
Brief Answer:
it is not strange
Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
This is not something to be worried. This finding of stool analysis is typical for infective diarrheas. It should be mainly treated with good rehydration, easier food, probiotics and medications such as loperamid and spasmex. In your case, there may be combination of enterocolitis and bowel irritation due to antibiotic therapy. In these cases it is advisable to do serologic tests in blood and parasitic tests of stool to verify exact bacteria or parasite that is causing diarrheas. Then more specific antibiotic can be used. Wish you good health. Regards
