Suggest Treatment For Difficulty In Swallowing Liquids While Treating Severe Anxiety
Question: I have difficulty swallowing liquids. There is no obstruction, I just find it hard to initiate a swallow, and I am afraid of choking on water. I think it is an anxiety symptom as I had two major operations last year and it has taken a long time to recover. I am otherwise fairly fit and healthy, I am 65 and I work full time.

Brief Answer:
speech pathologist or counselor
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
I am sorry that you are having this symptom. Seeing a speech pathologist may be helpful to you.
They can make sure that there are no mechanical issues involved in your swallowing and may be able to help you overcome this condition.
If the speech pathologist does not help you then seeing a counselor that is trained in helping people cope with anxiety may give you some relief.
Also can you please tell me what all Operations did you have?
Any other Symptoms/problems apart from this?
Please let me know if you have further questions,
Regards

The operations were knee replacements; one in March and one in XXXXXXX The first was fine, but the second was complicated by a Baker's cyst. I still haven't regained full mobility though there is constant slow improvement. But the experience has left me feeling very depleted, physically and emotionally, my appetite has not recovered and I am often tearful and anxious, and, of course, afraid that my swallowing issue is a first sign of some horrendous neurological illness like MND.
Brief Answer:
see speech therapist first
Detailed Answer:
Hello and I am sorry you have had these problems.
Surgeries are traumatic for all of us and especially when there are complications. Depression and anxiety can result.
Speech therapists are really the best people to evaluate swallowing problems and to assure you that your swallowing function is intact.
If you are concerned about motor neuron disease then seeing a neurologist may be helpful.
No matter what is going on seeing a counselor to work on controlling stress and anxiety can be useful to you.
I wish you the best and hope your symptoms resolve soon.
