Brief Answer:
can be due to Lumbar muscle strain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

The pain of the left side of your back can be due to Lumbar muscle strain- due to tear or pull of muscle fibers.

For this condition, you have to do stretching & strengthening exercises in which you have to stretch tight muscle & strengthen weakened ones which will alleviate stress.

The following measures will help with the pain
• Lie on a hard bed.
• Anti -inflammatory drugs like Tablet Motrin 1 tablet as and when required ( do not repeat a dose before 6 hours) with food will help relieve the pain.
• Correct your posture while sitting
• Avoid prolonged sitting
• Avoid strenuous activity & lifting heavy weights.
• Apply diclofenac gel on the affected area. Warm compresses will also help.

Adequate rest and proper nutrition are equally important. Drink lots of fluids since dehydration affects the disc and muscles. Eat a diet rich in fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables, nuts, milk, eggs, pulses and cereals. Do a brisk walking exercise for 40 minutes daily.

Get 6-8 hours of refreshing sleep daily.
Do start with swimming. This will good for most of the back pains.
I hope this answers your query.

The pain is not that low. It's in one spot right under my left rib cage. The discomfort started a few months ago, but was sporadic, now constant.

Brief Answer:
MRI scan will help in diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If the pain is persistent then it is best to get an MRI scan of back done to find the exact cause. Till then hot compress and oral muscle relaxants can help.
Hope my answer is helpful.
