Question: My husband has post polio syndrome. He is being discharged from Medical City XXXXXXX today after having pneumonia and suffering from hallucunations and disorientation. The neurologist stated that this is the new "norm" for him. Some days will be ok and some days will be confusing for him.. I need to find a doctor for this as close to home as possible. Is there a post polio doctor close to XXXXXXX XXXXXXX for this?

Brief Answer:
No specific post-polio doctor, neurologist most appropriate.

Detailed Answer:
I read you question carefully and I understand your concern.

In terms of a specialist for post polio syndrome I am afraid that there are no doctors dedicated to one single condition, especially a rare one which is bound to become rarer in the US where there have been no new cases of polio since 1994.

The specialist best equipped to diagnose post polio syndrome would be a neurologist, so you have already been diagnosed by the most appropriate specialist. If you are looking for neurologists apart from the one at Medical City XXXXXXX then some names in XXXXXXX would be XXXXXXX XXXXXXX (1445 Heritage Dr Ste A) or XXXXXXX Flavill (1441 Redbud Blvd Ste 231).

I would suggest you discuss again with the first neurologist or get a second opinion about the hallucinations and disorientation because I must say they are not usual manifestations of post polio syndrome. Post polio syndrome is manifested through muscle weakness and fatigue, may be complicated by respiratory issues when breathing muscles are involved, but it doesn't normally affect higher mental functions. So it is not that clear why there should be confusion, unless there are also associated brain issues such as dementia worsened by the respiratory issue.
