Suggest Treatment For Diverticulitis And Severe Pain Near Prostate

Question: Hello. I wrote an inquiry last week and received an answer but I want to follow up( he advised me on what tests I needed) In May I was diagnosed with diverticulitis even though my severe pain was coming from the area of my prostate. The doctors put me on Cipro and an antifungal drug. After a few weeks I seemed to get better but got sick again with the same symptoms at the end of August. The doctors put me on the same drugs again but I never did get feeling well. Went to my urologist about 3 weeks ago and he prescribed Cipro again and something to shrink my prostate. Since my exam by my urologist I have new and scary symptoms: when I urinate fecal matter and/or gas comes out of my penis along with a lot of pain. He sent me in for tests last week where a catheter was inserted in my urethra and then into my bladder, filling them with contrast so a picture could be taken of them. My follow up with the urologist is this Thursday. It really seems like no one is taking this seriously except me, the person that is going through all of this pain and uncertainty. It's obvious to me that I need surgery but everyone acts like it's no big deal. My question to you is this: do I wait for my follow up or do I go to the emergency room and see what they can do for me? Thank you in advance for your help. Needless to say I am very concerned.

If you are in serious pain then you may go to the emergency room. If not then I would suggest to wait for your appointment with your Urologist since he already has all your data and files. Also what has been with your prostate cancer? radiation?

You may have a entero-vesical fistula and and surgery for these cases needs time and preparation. You may also need to have a ct scan and a cystoscopy to assess the surrounding structures and to see how big is the opening from the bladder. Surgery may require several steps to ensure a proper outcome. This is a technically difficult surgery with resection of the colon and resection of a part of a urinary bladder. The healing process would also take its toll on your body.

To prepare for this surgery, if you are smoking stop smoking for at least 6 weeks before the surgery. If you are obese , cut down on junk food and emptying calories and load up on protein. Try to decrease your BMI to normal or near normal. This would improve your outcome after the surgery.
