Suggest Treatment For Dizziness, Confusion And Excessive Sweating

default
Posted on Fri, 25 Nov 2016
Question: This is fourth time in 2 years the following has happened to me. Onset was sudden and intense each time, and with exception of today, elevated weather temperature of 90 or more degrees was present. Symptoms: Extreme weakness, confusion, dizziness and immediate drenching sweat on face and throughout my body. I have to lie down immediately, close my eyes, and fall into a deep sleep several hours. Upon awakening, same after effect is present: I seem okay -- no confusion or dizziness, but I feel weak/tired, and generally wrung out. My clothes are damp from having endured complete body sweats. Further info: I am a 65 year old (young:) ) female with no history of heart disease or strokes.

Brief Answer:
Symptoms due to heat exposure....

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I read your message and understood your problem.

First, I need to know if these symptoms appear only when you are exposed to hot weather? All the 4 times you were exposed to hot weather?

Heat exhaustion is quite common in people who are sensitive to hot weather especially in kids and elderly.

Dizziness, heavy sweats, confusion and even fainting are the main symptoms.

In such cases the only treatment is rest, going to somewhere fresh in your house and take plenty of rest. Avoid going out in the sun and you can take salty water and lots of fluids to keep yourself hydrated and to feel better after the episode.
Taking ORS (oral rehydration salt) with water can help keep hydrated and minimize the symptoms.

When you can not avoid going out to the sun drink as much water as you can. This will lower the chance for experiencing this episode again.

You say to have hypertension for which are being treated adequately. When exposing to high temperature, your blood pressure will get higher too, and will aggravate/precipitate the symptoms you experienced.

The meds you take for hypertension will help stabilize the bp and you get back better.

Having IBS is associated with episodes of lose stool and perhaps diarrhea. These are causing your body to lose fluids and electrolytes. When exposing to high temperature, the loss of fluids and electrolytes will be greater precipitating the symptoms you felt. That's why I recommend drinking plenty of fluids when exposing to high heat although having hypertension.

If you'll have the same episode although following the advice as given above, then, your cardiologist should be further consulted to evaluate the status of your cardiovascular system further through ECG, echocardiogram, stress test.

I hope this is helpful for you.
Let me know if you have further queries.
